As this week comes to a close, I couldn't miss recognizing Nurses Appreciation Week, recognized this year from May 6th-May 12th. A little late, but better late than never!
This is a special time to recognize the incredible men and women who care for us and our loved ones through every stage of life.
Whether it’s holding our hand in the delivery or emergency room, comforting our children, or patiently explaining treatment options for aging parents, nurses are often the quiet heroes in the background of our most important moments. They bring not only clinical expertise, but also a deep sense of compassion and calm.
Why This Week Matters
For many of us, nurses have played a pivotal role in our family’s story. Maybe it was the nurse who stayed past her shift during a difficult birth, or the school nurse who called with concern when our child wasn’t feeling well. These moments matter—and so do the people behind them.
Nurses Appreciation Week gives us a chance to pause and say a heartfelt thank you to those who show up every day to care for our families, often sacrificing their own time and energy in the process.
It's Not Too Late to Show Appreciation
Here are a few simple, but meaningful ways to celebrate the special nurse in your life:
- Write a note to the nurses at your OB-GYN’s office, your pediatrician’s practice, or your child’s school.
- Have your kids draw a picture or make a card for a nurse they remember or admire.
- Send snacks, coffee, or small gifts to a local hospital or clinic staff lounge.
- Share your story on social media using #NursesAppreciationWeek to highlight a nurse who made a difference for your family.
- Teach your kids about the role of nurses, helping them understand the importance of kindness, respect, and gratitude toward caregivers.
A Message of Thanks
To all the nurses who’ve held our hands, comforted our children, and helped us feel seen and cared for—you are so appreciated. You are not only skilled professionals, but also deeply trusted members of our family’s care team. A special shout-out to my momma, Mary Ann Cianci, a dedicated Labor & Delivery Nurse of over 35 years! Happy Nurses Appreciation Week!
